Why do my cycle tyres have a direction of rotation arrow on them?

I've just bought some new tyres for may bike and I notice they have this arrow molded into the sidewall. None of the other tyres have this on them. I can't see how it would make any difference on a bike where both sides of the wheel are symmetrical, not like a car where there is a clear inside and outside.
