Why do i feel like this about respect?

lately ive been really thinking about what respect means. is it weird for a 17 year old to think that to give someone respect is really important? up until iv always considered respect as something an old person would tell to someone young, but lately iv notice how important it is to me. is it right for me at my age to find it irritating for example, when someone says they will do something but doesnt keep to their word, therefore disrespecting themselves and me? a bit like when someone may have a problem with you but dont respect you enough to say it to you. another example being my girlfriend leaving me and disrespecting me by seeing another boy 2 days later. its not the fact she left me for no reason that annoys me, its that she didnt respect me enough to say what was going on. i dont think iv worded this right. thanks
